Coastal Erosion in Canada

Coastal erosion occurs when land and sediment are eroded from coasts due to waves, rain, human activities, and other factors. This can lead to land and property getting swallowed up by the rising sea levels, which changes the waves in coastal regions. Canada has the longest coastline in the world, at 243,797 km. So, coastal erosion would be a natural hazard that would affect millions of Canadians. Coastal erosion can be caused by waves due to the rising sea level. All over Canada, shorelines are being forced inland because of the rising sea. This is a problem because that means there is a loss of land and property. There are also habitats that get lost with the loss of land on the coasts. Due to the size of Canada's coastline alone, I would say that there is a great risk of coastal erosion affecting the country. Erosion is a natural process, so there is no way to stop it from happening. But there are ways to slow it down. Things like seawalls can be put in place on coastlines to take the force of the waves so they aren't hitting things like rocks and sand that can erode more quickly. These walls can be made of concrete or wood for the best results. Another strategy that has been used is adding vegetation to the coastlines. This has the same idea as the seawalls. The vegetation is used to take the force of the waves and stabilize the coastline.

Hello, coastal erosion is definitely a big deal for Canada, and you’re right rising sea levels just make it worse. I like how you pointed out the ways people try to slow it down, like seawalls and adding vegetation.
ReplyDeleteHey, I really like how you added that erosion can not only damage land but it can also damage homes, and result in a lot of people losing their homes. I enjoyed reading your post.

ReplyDeleteYou did a great job highlighting the serious impact of coastal erosion on Canada’s extensive coastline and the communities living there. I really like how you mentioned practical mitigation strategies like seawalls and vegetation, which show that even though erosion is natural, we can still take action to reduce its effects. - Switzerland BY
ReplyDeleteGreat explanation of why coastal erosion is such a big issue for Canada. I like how you connected rising sea levels to land loss and habitat damage. Your examples of seawalls and vegetation were clear and showed how we can slow erosion even if we can’t stop it.
